The Saturday, September 12, 1981 show at the Greek was my first Dead show as an adult. I'd seen them once before, at Monterey Pop in 1967, and was not only not impressed but formed a foolish dislike for them that kept me from experiencing the band at its '70s peak. I tried to make up for lost time through the '80s, but their downward spiral was well along by 1990 and I got off the bus, rather than stand through another rendition of "Desolation Row" as part of a seven-song first set.
