But this seems like an opportune time to repost .t's top 25 tapes of the moment, from a moment over two years ago! ------------ included post ------------------- Message-Id: <"<7D81B3308112697C>7D81B3308112697C@x-mc-0817-ms1.xerox"@-SMF-> Date: Wed, 22 Nov 1995 13:46:21 PST To: <@alpha.xerox.com:p00955@---.com> ("George") From: George_Haberberger@---.com (Haberberger,George D) Subject: .tiedrich's top 25 From: jeff@---.com (jeff tiedrich) Subject: tiedrich's top twenty-five shows -- a whole new can of worms Date: Wed, 22 Nov 1995 13:23:27 -0500 I had so much fun following (and commenting) on the responses to my top ten list -- and there really were many thoughful and reasonable contributions -- that I thought I'd keep the ball rolling and lengthen the list. This was a much harder task. First of all, I've never really thought past a top ten before. Secondly, once you get past the first twenty or so, the list really becomes arbitrary (ha! as if this whole effort isn't just a wee bit capricious). You could really argue that most of 1974 belongs on this list. One the other hand, with the exception of 8/6/71 (and maybe 4/5/71 and 8/24/71), I still feel strongly that no 1971 show deserves a spot here. Note, however, that -- lordy! -- I've put one 1977 show in the top 25, though probably not the one most folks would pick. I know folks will question the inclusion of the 1975 Great American Music Hall show, but listen again: it's an almost-perfect show with an extremely high-energy level. Help/Slip/Franklin's, Eyes Of The World, ahhh! And to everyone who has emailed me to ask, "hey, what about <insert favorite show here>? What are you, nuts?" -- remember, this is no one's list but my own. It's highly personal and based on my peculiar taste. This ain't science, folks! Well, what the hell, here's the next installment in this fool's errand: Uncle Jeff's Top Twenty-Five Shows Of All Time ------------------------ An Highly Debatable List 1. 05/26/72 Strand Lyceum Theatre, London, England 2. 11/30/73 Boston Music Hall, Boston, MA 3. 08/06/74 Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ 4. 07/26/72 Paramount Theater, Portland OR 5. 04/26/72 Jahrhunderthalle, West Germany 6. 06/28/74 Boston Garden, Boston, MA 7. 11/08/70 Capitol Theater, Port Chester, NY 8. 06/26/73 Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA 9. 02/27/69 Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA 10. 10/19/74 Winterland Arena, San Francisco, CA 11. 04/14/72 Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen, Denmark 12. 02/13/70 Fillmore East, New York, NY 13. 05/02/70 SUNY-Harpur Campus, Binghamton, NY 14. 04/24/72 Rheinhalle, Duesseldorf, West Germany 15. 09/28/72 Stanley Theater, Jersey City, NJ 16. 04/27/69 Labor Temple, Minneapolis MN 17. 03/25/72 Academy Of Music, New York, NY 18. 11/08/69 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA 19. 05/19/77 Fox Theater, Atlanta, GA 20. 10/29/73 Keil Auditorium, St Louis, MO 21. 05/26/73 Kezar Stadium, San Francisco, CA 22. 06/26/74 Civic Center, Providence, RI 23. 09/17/72 Boston Music Hall, Boston, MA 24. 08/13/75 Great American Music Hall, SF, CA 25. 09/10/91 Madison Square Garden, NYC, NY Contenders to the throne: =========================== What do we do about these? These are shows from which we only have 30- to 45-minute surviving fragments. They're hotter than hell, and if the complete shows are anywhere near what circulates they deserve a spot on the list. As they stand, however, they're too short to evaluate. 04/24/70 Mammoth Gardens, Denver, CO 09/29/69a Cafe Au Go-Go, New York, NY 09/17/70 Fillmore East, New York, NY OK, gang, let's have at it ... .tiedrich
