It was never about money and certainly not in 1972. However, our friend Sam Cutler had turned the ship and the band looks like it made a nifty $242,000 profit in 1972. This would certainly change in 1973 when the average venue size would grow from about 5,700 seats to 13,500. We will analyze 1973 soon so let's get back to 1972.

The Grateful Dead played 88 shows in 1972 sold about 500,000 tickets and generated about $2.5 million in ticket sales. They filled about 85% of a capacity of about 600,000 (hard to get exact for the big outdoor shows like Bickershaw, Dillion, Folsom and Roosevelt. There was limited t-shirt and merchandising sales, but according to the accountants (shared to the Deadheads on the mailing list), the Dead's share of this was $1,424,543 (which must also include all money from Warner). Super cool is the breakdown of overhead which is about $1,200,000, leaving less than $300,000 as profit. Very interesting.

There are a few interesting discussions about Money and the Grateful Dead in 1972.
