37 Years Ago Tonight, I went to my shortest Grateful Dead show. It lasted 73 seconds, which you are hearing now. We listen to the FM broadcast of the prior night from Passiac as we drove down from Maine towards New Haven, and Jerry's voice did not sound good, especially in the second set. They made up this show on January 17, 1979, my last night as a teenager. Enjoy
Despite no show, police only arrested 16 people after arresting 19 before the cancellation. The show was rescheduled for http://gratefulseconds.blogspot.com/2017/11/this-deadhead-ends-his-teenage-years.html

Tripped hard in GFOX for an hour or so until we were gently "swept out" by the janitor.
My friends and I were outside walking towards a door to go in when the security guard says; the show is canceled! We were walking in a little late so most of the people going in were already inside. Security guard; "Nahh, I'm sorry but I can't let anyone in. You guys better get away from these doors there's gonna be a lot of pissed off people busting out these doors any minute." We were like, " Yeah right canceled, you're full of shit." Right then down the stairs on the street my friend yells; "Hey it's Jerry! Sure enough sitting passenger side back seat of car stuck in traffic it's Garcia. Him and the rest of the band all scrunched up in, not a limo just a regular 4 door Cadillac, which in ''78 were humongous. So there they are waving to us and we're like, !YEAHH!!! Jerry!Woooooo! Phiiiilll!!!! Screaming up to the security guard; LIAR! All this is taking place in the span of a minute. So we're all thinking they just got here
So there they are waving, laughing I had no idea they were waving bye, bye! the traffic starts moving slowly to the next intersection when they get through it the car just keeps going further and faster, further and further till it's out of sight. At that exact second lots of bummed out people start shuffling out the doors. Not like that security guard thought, he expected an angry rioting drug crazed mob which would destroy everything in it's path but no it was nothing like that. Yeah some people were disappointed. I certainly was, I was 18years old, would have been my 2nd show but what can a person do when something is out of your control? Accept it and make the best of it. We made parties, found parties NewHaven was the party capital of the country that night! Of course that was a very different world back then, a lot more free and fun too! A person could smoke a cigarette at show even if it was inside an arena or even a theater. But this is the new compliant world.
